Poultry Workers
  • most of the immigrants work in slaughter houses.
    • There are an estimated 4.1 million undocumented women in the U.S. today
Frmworkers
  • farmworkers suffer from higher rates of toxic chemical injuries and skin disorders than any other workers in the country.
  • Every year there are thousands of physician-diagnosed pesticide poisoning.

Immigration & Nativism`

1. What is nativism?
Nativism is a policy or belief that protects or favors the interest of the native population of a country over the interests of immigrants.

2. What were the two main sources of nativism in the early 19th century?
The large waves of immigrants, many of whom were skilled tradesman, provided a large pool of inexpensive labor that threatened the well-being of native artisans and other workers and strong anti-Catholic strain.

3. What were the two main groups that resulted from nativism?
The two groups that resulted from natvism was the Ku Klux Klan and the Know Nothing Party.

4. What has been the result of 20th century nativism?
the collapse of the economies of many Eastern European nations, workers from those countries emigrated to the West.

Migration - the process or act of migrating.

Immigration - the movement of non-native people into a country in order to settle there .

Immigrants in America

1. What countries did they come from?
The firsrt immigrants that came to America were Europeans. The 12 million immigrants first went through Ellis island, a small island in New York.

2. Why did they come to America?
They came to America to seek for oppurtinities and jobs, and a better life


3. Were they welcome here? EXPLAIN.

4. What did they do when they arrived? Where did they live? Jobs? Housing
They would find jobs, and they would live in basements.
The men worked slaughter houses and the women would sow buttons onto shirts.

Pashtuns and Hazaras in Afghanistan

1. The Hazaras now form about 9% of  Afghanistan's population.
2. They are usually found with sedentary farming and town life, mostly in the fertile eastern valleys north and south of the Hindu Kush.

3. The Hazaras speak Farsi and are mostly Shi'i Muslims (primarily Twelver Shi'i, some Ismaili Shi'is),
4. the Hazaras were driven to the barren dry mountains of central Afghanistan.
